Lebara Play will offer more than 150 TV channels and 3,000 movies in 13 languages to watch unlimited, anytime and anywhere

Lebara has entered the streaming and video-on-demand market with the launch of a new entertainment service for migrants, Lebara Play.

It will offer more than 150 television channels and 3,000 movies. It is available in 13 different languages for Tamil, Turkish, French West African and English West African audiences across Europe. The latter will be the first content to be widely available.

The amount of content will be increased to 250 channels and 5000 movies by the end of the year. It is available in the UK from today with Germany, Netherlands and France.

Lebara Play content will be available across mobile, tablet, television and online, with the app available to download for free from Google Play for smartphones and tablets, with the app launching on the iTunes Store in the coming weeks.

It will stream content in resolutions up to 4k (four times the resolution of HD) and Lebara promises it features the fastest streaming speeds on the market.

Subscription packages start from £9.99 per month for web, tablet and smartphone, with customers able to sign up for a year and only pay for 10 months.

Lebara chief executive officer and chairman Yogananthan Ratheesan (pictured) told a media conference in Central London earlier today that its TV, money and other migrant services are the future of the company.

“This is how we see the future beyond the MVNO business that we have built over the past 20 years,” he said.

Customers can register a maximum of three devices to their Lebara Play account, and can watch two simultaneously.

Lebara Play will be available in the UK, Germany, Netherlands and France by the end of this month. The rest of Europe will be launched over the summer and other territories worldwide by the end of the year.

Ratheesan added: “Serving the migrant community is at the core of everything we do at Lebara.  While the need to call loved ones is never far away, as new locations become home for our customers, different needs such as financial services and entertainment become more important.

“Lebara Play is an unrivalled service designed for an under-served community; and the launch proves that we’re delivering on our plans to disrupt the existing entertainment landscape and diversify our communications business.”
